Right, well SPOnG's fount of footballing wisdom, Andy, downloaded Sensible World of Soccer from Xbox Live Arcade as soon as he could. He played the trial version, deemed that it was good aside from the fact that he was occasionally kicked off XBLA - and in his nostalgic excitement opted to purchase the full version.

Would it download? Would it hell. It was as recalcitrant as a Manchester United player being sent off. Apparently, in fact, it's been pulled due to a bug that... keeps signing you out of Xbox Live forcing you out of the game and back to the dashboard

Microsoft has calmly explained, "It has come to our attention that an incorrect version of Sensible World of Soccer was made available on Xbox LIVE Arcade... which has since been taken down. This version incorrectly disconnected users that attempted to connect to Xbox LIVE.

"We are currently investigating the issue and will have a correctly functioning version of Sensible World of Soccer available soon.

"Any users that have already downloaded Sensible World of Soccer will need to delete their copy of the game and download it again when the correctly functioning version is available in order to enjoy online play via Xbox LIVE. Following this process does not incur any additional charges.

"Please look out for the fully functional version of Sensible World of Soccer soon. We thank you for your patience."

Codemasters has also offered its excuses, saying on its website, "It has come to our attention that an incorrect version of Sensible World of Soccer was made available on Xbox Live Arcade.

"We are currently investigating the issue and will have a correctly functioning version of Sensible World of Soccer available soon.

"Any users that have already downloaded Sensible World of Soccer will need to delete their copy of the game and download it again when the correctly functioning version is available in order to enjoy online play via Xbox Live".

Andy SPOnG commented, a solitary tear rolling down his rheumy left cheek, "I... I don't understand, why is it gone? Make them bring it back! What good is a f*cking trailer? Give me the f*cking game!"

See, see what you've done Codemasters!

How on earth do you upload the 'incorrect version' of a game that has been in the works for ages so its an Xbox Live Arcade title??

What they meant to say was 'Sorry we f**ked up and found some bugs in the game'.

What gets me then its an OLD seriously OLD game just a plain 2D soccer game...How hard can it be to stick something like that on Live anyways??

Oh, it's simple, especially when the game doesn't have to support multiple screen modes including HD, PAL & NTSC formats, on-line play (including supporting exceptionally slow internet connections), interacting correctly with the xbox dashboard/system software, a completely new set of format holder software standards....

Or for the short version - keep your comments to yourself when you haven't a clue what you are on about.

Ooooo, cheeky.

Ok, I'll bite.

1. Screen modes: I hardly doubt a next-gen console would even murmur at the prospect of upscaling a 2D game to HD res, or the NTSC/PAL resolutions for old skool "S-def'ers".
2. On-line play: I thought big companies had libraries they could pull out of their asses for that (esp. XBL)
2b. Slow 'net connections: screw 'em and their stinking 9k6 modems.
3. Xbox dash/format standards: should have just gone to PSN where things are much more fast and loose.

If you are biting, should I suck?

1 - Upscaling is possible but looks crap compared to real high def.
2 - Libraries are good, but someone has to write them in the first place.
2b - Ignoring is not an option, MicroSoft requirement for all games.
3 - Not actually the case. PS3 is far harder to develop for.

And what the hell am I doing?

Microsft has libraries for all of the Live integration that a game like Sensi would need.

Only when you get to using the SPEs. The main core of the cell, which is a cut down Power PC processor, could piss Sensi, a M68000 era Amiga/MegaDrive game. So all you have to do is a re-compile and some touching up, same as for the 360.

But why would you ever want to do anything but upscale Sensi? Unless you're creating a new version of the game with new graphics, which would rob it of any retro charm. Still, in that case you'd produce new artwork for the highest res, then down scale. Either way, it's pretty trivial compared to, say, writing the 68000 and Amiga chipset emulators (assuming they ported the Amiga version, and not the abhorrent Megadrive/Genesis version).

I keep hearing this, but rarely from real developers, and when one does, there's always another following up to counter it. Besides, my flippant and not entirely serious comment was WRT the XBL development rules and restrictions imposed by Microsoft.

From my understanding its using the original source code from the Amiga version and they have written an emulator to run it on the 360...

Sweet. None of the 16-bit console rubbish

No wonder I am currently rubbish at it with these damned Xbox 360 controllers! I need a Cheetah Bug in order to kick some pixelly ass.

I was runner-up in the Sensible World Cup, you know. I should never have lost... [Error old fart overflow please reboot editor).

How I miss you Bug.
