The Charts: Mario Versus The Assassin

It's all a bit of a Crysis

The Charts: Mario Versus The Assassin
Ubisoft's Assassin’s Creed has crept - like a stealth-elephant - into the Charts at Number 1 this week, bumping Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare down to Number 2.

The Xbox 360 stock keeping unit (SKU) trumps the PS3 version, claiming 67% of Assassin's Creed's sales. The game is also the second fastest selling new intellectual property (IP) in history...ever... on an individual format... behind The Getaway on the PS2 – way back in December 2002.

It's also the third fastest selling 360 title within a weekly period, following Halo 3 and CoD4 - so that flies in the face of lukewarm reviews, one of which can be found right here.

Electronic Arts' The Simpsons Game is still hanging round at the top of the Charts at Number 3, losing just 9% of last week's sales. THQ's WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 gets smacked down some, dropping two places to Number 4.

The superb Mario Galaxy performs disappointingly, failing to leap into the Charts any higher than Number 5. Rave reviews and not being able to get your hands on a Wii for love nor money nor non-loving sexual favours doesn't count for a huge amount, it would seem.

Dr Kawashima can't be put down, however, with Brain Training holding steady at Number 6. It also sees an impressive 67% jump in sales.

FIFA 08's still knocking about the Top 10, but it slips two places to Number 7. It meets Disney's High School Musical: Sing It! going the other way, as it climbs five places to Number 8 thanks to the release of the Wii version.

LucasArts' Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga also climbs this week, Forcing its way up from Number 17 to Number 11 thanks to the release of Wii and DS SKUs.

More disappointment comes in the form of EA and Crytek's Crysis. The AAA shooter enters the Charts at number 14. Maybe Crytek was aiming a little bit high with the optimal specs...

Next week, watch out for (deep breath)... Guitar Hero III from Activision, Kane and Lynch from Eidos, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Mario Party for the DS and Need For Speed: ProStreet.

The figures for Mario are for only two days only.

I don't understand why Crysis wasn't released a year from now. My Duo core, twin Nvidia 7950, 4gb of ram pc doesn't even begin to run it properly.

Plus it's full of bugs: AI, flying men, explosions happening where they shouldn't, shooting people point blank several times without them dying. Too many to list. Probably the most buggy game I've ever played. Excellent when it works but terrible when it breaks the illusion. There was absolutely nothing to gain from releasing it now. It would have still looked amazing in a years time (on more peoples machines) and they might have been able to make it play better.

Same for Assassin's Creed, but it was on two platforms.

Here's the first sterling example of whats happening with Wii. The majority of people that bought the hype and purchased it are non-gamers and don't give a s**t about a game like Mario. They thought it for Wii Sports as it was something fun & new...but after a few weeks that wares off and the machine is relegated to the cupboard only to appear bi-annually at some drunken piss-up when someone slurs 'hey! you still got that sport game thingy around here??? lets play that!'.

'Gamers game' sales are poor for the system, and soon so will be the majority of software for it, cause unfortunately, the system just hasn't got the legs - it never did. Nintendo already knows it as in evident by the company focusing more on Wiifit than Mario.

@ Hypnotoad, If you (or indeed the author of this poor article) had been bothered to work it out, the sales data from Mario Galaxy reflect only two days worth of sales. So to reach No 5 in the charts after only two days on sale is pretty damn good. And if anything this is the one Wii game that will be bought by both the 'hardcore' and 'casual' sets. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Assassin Creed was also on sale for two days and is top of the charts... as pointed out by tyrion above. And to say it did well to get to 5th is complete crap. All new games when they appear in the charts first have only been on sale for 2 days, this is the way of Friday releases and Monday charts.

All the other big games have managed to make it to No. 1 with two days of sales.

As kingskins and I have already pointed out, Assassin's Creed launched on the same day as SMG.

If it makes you feel any better, SMG was the 3rd best selling SKU last week behind the 360 versions of AC and CoD4. On the other hand, AC had been out for the same two days and CoD4 was in it's second week and dropped in sales about 30-odd percent, so maybe not..
