The best 2D game of all time?

Super Mario Bros 3 On Virtual Console Right Now
Yes! Super Mario Bros. 3, considered by many discerning gamers to be one of the greatest 2D games of all time, is now available on PAL Virtual Console for downloading at a cracking bargain-bucket price of only 500 Wii Points (£3.50 in earth money, the price of an expensive pint of strong, continental fighting lager in your average boozer these days).

There’s also two other ‘new’ titles on Wii’s Virtual Console today which you can choose to ignore, unless you bizarrely don’t want to revisit SMB3 this weekend.

These are 1990 NeoGeo title, cutesy platformer Blue's Journey, in which you can play "the small but heroic Blue” and rid planet Raguy of evil with a leaf whip. As well as not being as good as SMB3, it also costs more – a whopping 900 Wii points. Go figure.

Last up is Power Golf, a 1989 TurboGrafx-16 game for hardcore golf game nuts that costs 600 Wii points.

I'm actually waiting for the Super Mario All Stars pack to appear on VC.

Is it actually the original 8-bit NES SMB3, or the All Stars version with 16bit graphics?
Was there a different between versions with saves?
I seem to recall with SMB3 always playing the first world's levels again and again, which makes me wonder if there wasn't a saved game feature. I know one time we did the whistle cheat though, and visited all the worlds, and finally completed it in one long marathon night round a friend's house. ^_^
