New PlayStation 2 For Europe: On Cards

So what's all this about concentrating on PS3?

Posted by Staff
The forthcoming December-based festivities signal more than a run on Cabbage Patch Dolls, cheap Scotch, divorce litigation and an increase in depression in lonely, middle-age losers - they also signal the mutterings of a brand new PlayStation 2 for Europe!

As reported last week, Sony was going to be rolling out in Japan a PS2 with internal power supply yet somehow more slimness. The date for this has been confirmed as November 22nd.

Well, we can now confirm that New Year 2008 will, confusingly to us, reveal the same PS2 for us. Well, we can reveal that industry magazine, MCV has said that Sony has told it... phew... that "a European launch in the New Year is on the cards."

We are confused on two points really:

Firstly, we can't see how a new PS2, even if it is slimmer yet with an internal power supply, and even if it comes with a price drop at current retail prices, is going to benefit the PlayStation 3's sales. Sure, the new £299 PS3 doesn't play PS2 games... but surely that wouldn't mean you'd go out and buy a new PS2 (slimmer and with an internal... you get the idea)?

Secondly, on October 8th this year, it was revealed that once the 60Gb, backwardly-compatible PS3 sold out of extant stock, the £299, 40Gb, not-backwardly-compatible, PS3 would the UK's only choice. Part of the justification for this by SCEE in a press release, was the following:

"The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility - and this is because we believe this less important now than when we launched - as there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas. Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences."

The bolding is ours...

So, yes, we're confused and bewildered by the news that a new PS2 could be 'on the cards' for Europe (well, for anywhere really)... so, we've asked SCEE for a few comments to assuage our bewilderment. We'll report back when we get the answers.

And before you leap onto the Forum and tell us, "It's just a Wii damper! It's all about price war, you Northern dolts!" we know that. What we don't know is: why the mixed messages from earlier this year?

Until we find out... here are the specs for the new, Japan-bound, PS2 for you to be doing with...

The Official Sony Press Release... excitingly below...

If my PStwo died on me now I would so go and get one of those.

I agree if someone don't already have a PS2 i can't see them getting one with the PS3 (unless they missed that it no longer is BC)

Interesting, 65 games, most of which I do not want compared to the thousands of PS2/PS1 titles, is not enough. Real reasons, Let's think tank: they make lots more money on new games, and now I guess they could also make an emulator to download your old games over the Internet (at an price). I wonder of that is legal under anti-trusts considerations (actually there are also an number of constriction of supply problems in the console industry that might be begging for an MS anti-trust like full beating).

I glanced the article, are they saying they are taking the PS3 forward, and keeping the PS2 (as they did with the PS1)?

Yeah I agree, an spoiler for the Wii, with PS2 undercutting and the others offering hardcore game play

Now what might it look like, here is an rendition:
