A new, even more compact PS2 is reportedly on the way, along with a probable price drop of 25 percent.
The report - which comes from industry mag
MCV - suggests that the new version of the PS2 will emerge in early 2008, with the U.S. price dropping from $129 (£62) to the 'golden' price point of $99 (£47.50). If the U.K. price follows suit it will retail at around £75 or £80.
The price and size cuts will apparently be made possible because the PS2's power-supply is being changed from an external brick into an internal unit.
Before we all start whooping 'It lives!' and cackling maniacally, however, we should bear in mind that this remains unconfirmed and as such needs consigning to the status of 'rumour' at this point. SPOnG contacted Sony to see what it had to say and was told, "No comment".
Of course, no supplier of consumer goods wants to let slip a price cut months before it happens, so the company's denial is not unexpected.
With or without a price cut, the PS2 is still faring well. It just
celebrated its seventh birthday and has sold 120 million units worldwide. One final push wouldn't hurt, of course, and would put pressure on the Wii.
