Anime News Update – Sex, Spies, Horror

Essential Manga of the month – 009-1 and Red Garden

Posted by Staff
If you live in Japan and are amongst the small minority there who own Xbox 360s then you might be glad to hear that the first and second Blue Dragon cartoon episodes will be coming to Xbox LIVE for a cost of ABSOLUTELY FREE from November 15th to January 1st next year.

The free anime promotion is to pimp the budget priced edition of Blue Dragon which goes on sale today in Japan. Konami will also release the fourth volume of the Blue Dragon anime on DVD later this month.

In other anime news, if you happen to be part of the vast majority of our readership that are NOT Japan-residing 360 gamers, then never fear - as SPOnG can fully recommend that you buy this month’s two essential manga DVDs from our favourite manga merchants over at ADV Films.

First up is the numerically-named 009-1 from legendary creator Shotaro Ishinomori - a must-get for anyone into spies, manga or sex (so, err, everyone then? – Ed) with a storyline like something straight out of classic Ian Fleming.

In an alternate world, the Cold War has continued for 140 years and the world was divided into two factions: the West Block, and the East Block. The tension between the two factions, as well as the amount of nuclear weapons they have, rises.

Mylene Hoffman is the sexiest female cyborg SPOnG has ever seen, which is all kinds of wrong, we know, but... bah, whatever. Mylene is a spy for the West Block, busying herself with liberating scientists and taking on the world’s most hard-boiled assassin. Videogame publishers are surely already fighting for the rights to make Mylene into the next Lara Croft or Joanna Dark.

After titillating ourselves with romantic fantasies of future robot spies, we then decided to scare ourselves silly with ADV’s other top release this month, the horror that is Red Garden, described perfectly by Ain’t It Cool News as, “A thoroughly unconventional horror anime. A supernatural Breakfast Club meets Suicide Squad group of teenage girls faced with mortal danger in a modern day New York that oscillates between dark and dirty and glitzy art deco…. unmistakably a one-time high concept for anime.”

It’s barkingly insane and one of the most beautiful and frightening animated movies we’ve ever seen. You can buy both of these DVDs from ADV Films here.

That's good news. Blue Dragon is okay.

I can vouch for 009 and Red Garden, both cool series worth watching and owning. Perfect for breaks between gaming.
