Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, which is responsible for the Xbox 360, has posted financial results showing a profit for the quarter ending September 30th
After six straight annual losses, the division delivered 91 percent revenue growth and turned a $165 million (£80 million) profit. That compares to a $142 million (£69 million) loss a year earlier.
If it wasn't obvious, all eyes are on
Halo 3 for this one. The game
brought in $300 million (£150 million) worldwide in its first week alone, while also driving hardware sales.
Microsoft as a whole has also fared well, with the company,
like Nintendo, raising its profit forecasts for the year and posting 23 percent quarterly profit growth thanks to both
Halo 3 and strong sales of Vista. The company posted net profits of $4.29 billion (£2.08 billion), up from $3.48 billion (£1.69 billion) a year earlier. Revenue rose 27 percent to $13.76 billion.
The news will certainly be earning sighs of relief over at the entertainment and devices division, but whether the momentum can be maintained remains to be seen. There isn't a
Halo 3 for every quarter, after all.
While Nintendo and Microsoft have both seen strong results for the last quarter, Sony
posted a loss from its games division.
