Tropico for Dreamcast not to be

Tropico could have been a big hit on the DC considering the lack of God games.

We were very impressed with the first look at Tropico, a god game where you are a dictator in charge of a Caribbean island. Gathering of Developers treated us to a preview of the game at last year’s ECTS in London. We were even more impressed when we were told that it would be heading to Dreamcast.

Phil Steinmeyer of PopTop Software said, “We decided to do a Dreamcast version because we are a lazy bunch and the Dreamcast is easy to program for. The console also suits the look of the game very well. The Dreamcast gives a bright and clear appearance that we thought would suit the game down to a tee.”

But that was last year! The company has just announced that the Dreamcast version has been cancelled. This will come as a blow to fans of the console, who are seeing software support evaporate before their eyes, despite the machine being one of the best that is available today. The loss of Tropico is a particular shame, because the resource management genre is not well represented on Dreamcast, leaving DC owners with ‘only’ Black and White to look forward to. Mac and PC fans will be able to get their hands on Tropico later this year.
