Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will sell four million copies, according to SEGA.
It's a bold statement, given that the figure is equivalent to 20% of SEGA's total game sales last financial year.
The figure comes from Masanao Maeda, a corporate director at SEGA speaking at the Tokyo Games Show.
The spiky speedster has done it before, with the
first Sonic game having sold 4 million units when it was released back in 1991. That, however, was when SEGA was a platform holder and had the muscle that comes with it. Sonic is not quite the powerhouse franchise it once was, with the last game bearing the title
Sonic the Hedgehog having been
poorly received.
Still, with the historic first meeting of Sonic and Mario and an Olympics license, SEGA's chances of seeing those kinds of sales again seem significantly improved.
