Nintendo has confirmed that
Super Smash Bros. Brawl will include an online multi-player mode.
The mode will come in two forms: 'With Friends' - to allow you to wail on your mates, and 'With Anyone' - to allow you to smash, well, anyone.
The 'With Friends' mode will allow players to see whether their registered mates are online and jump into battles with them. The mode will also allow players to send off pre-written taunts during battle to add that psychological edge.
The 'With Anyone' mode will randomly hook up players who are looking for a fight. In the name of safety consciousness, however, players using the mode will not be able to see each others' names or send taunts.
Nintendo also teases, "We’re planning a number of services that make use of Wi-Fi, but we’ll reveal them gradually with the other modes." The only other detail given on these other services is, "there are other modes besides just free-for-alls." Demands in the Forum, please.
Additionally, Nintendo is including the option to kill time laying into a sandbag while you're waiting for a fight to start. Have a look at the screen below to see what we mean.
Online multiplayer has typically avoided beat-'em-ups due to network lag time. The fact that Nintendo has opted to include it does not mean that the company has magically solved the problem, however. The Smash Bros. Dojo official
website warns, "Because this form of communication is greatly affected by the distance between you and your opponent, your brawls may not run smoothly if you’re really far apart—like, for instance, if you’re connecting between Japan and America.
"The more distant you are, the worse your connection becomes, and the slower it feels. I apologize, but I hope you understand."
