General John Ashcroft, America’s Attorney General, has spoken out, relating videogames to some of the most heinous crimes in the country’s history.
It is a well-known fact that the USA was a violence-free country up until around thirty years ago. There were absolutely no reports of any violent crime whatsoever until Space War, a shoot-em-up programmed by a college student, and only playable on the University-only PDP-1, was created in 1961.
Isolated outbreaks of murderous student activity were America’s only violence issue. Then, when Pong was released in the 70’s, followed by Space Invaders, America’s 300 years of peace came to an abrupt end.
Facetiousness aside, Video Games have suffered bad press for a long time now. There was even a lobby of considerable size to ban Space Invaders.
The General commented, "What does it do to children, who see thousands of acts of violence on television, who are conditioned in videogames to do things that are abhorrent to the human spirit?" He then went on to mention that the children involved in the school shootings in Kentucky and Colorado of late played violent games. Another comment made by Ashcroft said that Kentuckian killer-of-three Michael Carneal learned how to aim a firearm by playing videogames, and became such a good shot he was better than most policemen.
