Wii Sells One Million In UK
The Wii has now sold over one million units in the UK according to the latest figures from Chart Track via Nintendo. That makes the Wii the fastest selling home console in the UK's history.

It has taken the Wii 38 weeks to pass the milestone, 12 fewer than the PlayStation 2, which hit that point 50 weeks after release. Behind that is the Xbox 360, which took 60 weeks.

Another statistical bone thrown our way by pleased-as-punch Nintendo is the fact that Nintendo platforms are performing well in the software market, too. A “recent week's” sales figures show the Wii taking a 68% share in home console software sales, while the DS grabbed 86% of handheld software sales.

Naturally, the occasion didn't pass without a spot of corporo gubbins. This time it was David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK who crowed, "The non-stop demand for Wii even in the traditionally slow sales periods for video games in the UK is clearly behind this record breaking achievement”.

“The performance of both systems appears to indicate that unprecedented interactive entertainment experiences, provided by a combination of the revolutionary nature of DS and Wii with the increasing number of unique software titles for the system from Nintendo and third parties, are being enjoyed by both avid and new gamers of all ages.

“With more great games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Endless Ocean launching in 2007, Wii, together with Nintendo DS, will continue to be the main driving forces behind the expansion of the video game market this year."

SPOnG asked Sony whether, given David Reeves' assertion at Leipzig that the PS3 is actually selling better than the PS2, the PS3 might actually hit 1 million sales faster than the Wii, but was met with a “no comment”.

Im sorry I dont for one second believe those software sales figures!! There just isnt any 'killer' games on the Wii really, what are people buying? Ive read elsewhere that the 360 has a global 2:1 software sales rate over the PS3 and Wii. The only way this makes sense is if they are including the 'given away for free with every wii' Wii Sports. In which case its a load of toss.

I think, if you go digging, the 2:1 comment was made by MS and it was about value of sales is 2:1 over any competitor, but seeing as how their system is generally a lot more expensive than the Wii, then there's a big part of that "value" (i.e. revenue, not profit).

And, before I forget:

It prints Stirling!
