Manhunt 2 Given ‘M’ Rating in US - Civil Liberty Restored

Now, time for the BBFC to give it an 18-rating in the UK

Posted by Staff
Great news to end the week with today, as Rockstar sends word that US ratings board ESRB has given an ‘M’ rating to Manhunt 2 on PS2, PSP and Wii – which means that it will finally be released over in the US in time for (a traditionally bloody) All Hallows Eve.

You will remember that back in June, Take-Two was compelled to suspend the release of Manhunt 2 when the ESRB issued an AO (Adults Only) rating, following a similar decision by the UK’s draconian British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to refuse the game an 18 certificate.

Manhunt 2 is now set to launch, ironically, on Halloween (October 31st) in the US (importers at the ready!) following the submission of a modified version of Manhunt 2 to the ESRB. SPOnG is not yet clear as to exactly what modifications have been made to the game, but we will be sure to find out as soon as we can get to speak to one of our Rockstar PR contacts (currently locked in a demo room, somewhere in Leipzig!).

"Manhunt 2 is important to us, and we're glad it can finally be appreciated as a gaming experience," said Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games. "We love the horror genre. Manhunt 2 is a powerful piece of interactive story telling that is a unique video game experience. We think horror fans will love it."

SPOnG has one thing to say to those in the UK games industry who are not offering to support Rockstar in its attempts to have Manhunt 2 given a classification in this country, with many should-know-better so-called ‘liberals’ bleating that the industry ‘really needs to draw a line in the sand with Manhunt 2' - SHAME ON YOU!

Manhunt 2 is an adult-themed videogame and as such deserves to be on sale with an 18-rating.

You can see what SPOnG’s Adam Hartley thought of the BBFC’s decision and ELSPA’s shameful, opportunistic move to back that decision over on MCV.

And, if you haven't already, you can sign the petition on the Prime Minister's website to support Rockstar in its quest to get Manhunt 2 rated in the UK.

Congrats to Rockstar. Finally, justice is served out correctly.
Once it gets to U.K shelves I'll be happier though.

Halloween? That's a clever bit of marketing and timing. Lets hope it hasn't lost too much of its bite.

Damn, I'm so up for the Wii version of this game, now.

Civil Liberty Restored

Not really, since they got it their way. The game does not feature its original content anymore.

Well, let's wait and find out exactly what the modifications were to get the M rating before we start casting aspersions, eh?

I imagine many undeserving palms were greased with used dollar bills in suspicious back alleys in Rockstar's quest to get this certificated... I don't have any facts or reliable sources to back up this, it's purely what I imagine...

Anyone else thinking something like "artistic" black & white, ala Kill Bill's Western release, for when things get violent?
