Latest High Definition Virtual Reality Headset - Pictures
Ah, sweet nostalgia! SPOnG has just received this rather fetching picture of a model sporting something called the HEADPLAY Personal Cinema System, which reminded us of 'the future' as imagined in poor Sci-Fi novels in 1984 and also, more cheerily, of the good ol’ days of 'the old E3', where strange bedroom hardware developers in the fusty-smelling Kentia Hall would foist their latest virtual reality headsets on us, eagerly advising us that they were “the future of interactive entertainment,” as we backed away to the safety of the known world upstairs in the West Hall.

These days, what with the new slimmed down rubbish E3, we don’t get the questionable pleasure of running into such dedicated hardware geeks. However, we are informed that the HEADPLAY Personal Cinema System is a “portable, visual headset and media center that delivers an immersive, high resolution, cinematic, big screen viewing experience for gaming, movie watching and Internet use.”

The HEADPLAY press guff continues: “The Headplay Personal Cinema System redefines the portable media device category, providing an immersive and startling 3D viewing experience for both movie and game enthusiasts and a no-compromises mobile entertainment experience for anyone on the go.”

The system displays a virtual 52” screen, designed by industrial design firm, IDEO, supporting various resolution levels up to 1024 X 768 and accepts a composite video, component video and S-video signal in the formats of NTSC, PAL and SECAM.

It’s currently on the market at $499 (£250). For more check www.headplay.com

I've got a Sony Glasstron lying dustily still in its box in a cupboard somewhere. It was awesome - but it was only NTSC, and at the time, I just didn't have the devices to drive it.

But while headplay "supports" resolutions of upto 1024x768 (a peculiarly old-fashioned aspect ratio) it has a native resolution of 800x600... not really "High Definition" - not just because it's sort of mid-resolution, but also because all HD resolutions are widescreen.

And this virtual 52" screen malarky! At what distance? A virtual 52" screen at 10 ft is just a virtual 26" screen at 5 ft. Or a virtual Sony Watchman at 3 inches.

Argh. Corpo-speak strikes again. "Redefines" indeed. If I wrote a press release, I'd approach it as "Yeah, remember the Virtual Boy? That sucked, this is going to be 1337z0r!"

I guess investors and shareholders aren't really 'with it' to 'get it' though.

You should call Peter Noble. A career in PR awaits you.

Though strictly as my pedant senses begin to twitch, the VB was a console, this is just a display. And it's not 3D.

I figured I'd get me one. But a quick eBay search only brought this result...

Sure it's not 3D, the resolution isn't earth-shattering, and it's got no motion-sensing for true VR... but it means that for £250 you can watch porn on a giant screen without the mrs knowing what you're up to...

"What are you watching dear?"
"Errrrr... Die Hard 4"
"With your trousers down?"
