Microsoft: New SideWinder Mouse is a "Gaming System"

As if

When is a mouse not a mouse? When it is nothing less than a gaming system! That's apparently what the new Microsoft SideWinder Mouse (pictured) is – at least, according to Microsoft.

At the Leipzig Games Convention earlier today, Microsoft Hardware announced its new SideWinder line has been built ‘from the ground up’ specifically for gaming.

The new ‘gaming system’ features one-touch Windows Vista Games Explorer access, a Quick Turn button so you can check your in-game perimeter, a weight cartridge system for personalizing the mouse's weight (!) and an LCD built onto the little critter.

Frankly, it looks like the designers have simply taken some functions traditionally controlled via the keyboard or displayed in a control panel, and stuffed it into a mouse. The anti-RSI campaigners are going to be overjoyed at the prospect of people further contorting their hands for hours on end. SPOnG foresees personal injury claims in the years to come.

The SideWinder Torture Mouse (sorry, 'Gaming System') will go on sale this October for US $80 (£40). For the ‘gaming systems’ masochists, take a look at Microsoft’s hyperbolic press release for the full skinny.
