Omega Sektor – The Wembley Of Gaming Opens Today

Biggest gaming centre in the world opens its doors

SPOnG spent an enjoyable afternoon yesterday at the rather lavish launch event for what we can only describe as ‘the Wembley of gaming’ – Birmingham’s immense new gaming venue, Omega Sektor, on the site of the former Virgin Megastore (pictured right here).

While many of the London-based journalists on the trip up to the midlands were mumbling about having to go beyond the M25 to see ‘a glorified internet café’ they soon shut their mouths when a stretch Hummer picked them up at New Street station and whisked them off to the first official opening of Omega Sektor up the road on Corporation Street, much to the amusement of Brum’s many shoppers yesterday, who seemed to think P Diddy was in town!

Omega Sektor is kitted out with an amazing amount of high-end gaming tech, with hundreds of PCs and a smattering of Xbox 360s, PS3s and, our favourite, a VIP cinema room tucked away upstairs with Wii Sports competitions running on the big screen.

"Just imagine booking this space our for parties! That would rule!" SPOnG overheard one eager gamer telling his mates last night. And he was only right. Omega Sektor's VIP room is the videogaming nightclub fantasy we've dreamed about for years made real!

The centre also has publisher-sponsored rooms, with the Square Enix/Final Fantasy and THQ/S.T.A.L.K.E.R-themed rooms looking particularly cool.

“It’s wonderful, Birmingham really needs something like this, all the kids I’ve spoken to at college can’t wait for it to open,” said one of the excited promo girls we spoke to while having a crafty fag outside the venue.

Adrian Le Mans from Omega Sektor told SPOnG "We are very excited that the public will soon be able to experience social gaming in a whole new way."

Gamers who want to make their way to Brum this weekend to check out the centre will also be treated to free gaming all weekend while they are trailing all the software on show. After that Omega Sektor will charge you a mere £1 for half hour’s gaming or internet use and members will be able to get three hours of gaming for a fiver. Bargain!
