Third-Party 'PlayStation 3' Dev Kit Released
Mercury Computer Systems has released what it's calling a "new MultiCore Plus software development kit (SDK) for PlayStation 3".

Don't get us wrong here - this is not going to enable you to start developing your own Heavenly Sword or Motor Storm in the very near future using this kit. It's actually a Linux-based collection of tools aimed at developing for the Cell processor.

According to the company, "The SDK helps developers create new applications for Sony’s PS3 game console. The SDK is designed to focus on performance and developer productivity. It includes a seamless package of tools and libraries to help developers take full advantage of Mercury’s Cell BE processor architecture (chip used in PS3)."

Joel Radford, vice president of corporate marketing and strategic alliances at Mercury explains, "Customers who choose to start out with the PS3 can later migrate seamlessly to more sophisticated hardware solutions from both Mercury and IBM by leveraging our software alongside Yellow Dog Linux from Terra Soft.”

In short, the PlayStation 3 name is being used to give some prominence to an SDK aimed squarely at the corporate - and academic - worlds where engineers can use relatively low-cost PS3s as development platforms for big number-crunching (we like tech-speak at SPOnG) systems before migrating these over to - for example - Blade servers. We've already seen similar applications using Helios content management software.
