Beowulf: First Scholarly Screens And Info

When poetry and carnal upgrades meet

Posted by Staff
Ubisoft has just 'announced' that Beowulf is coming to the world of gaming. More specifically (since the project was mentioned at the Ubidays press event) the publisher has revealed that the game will come to the Xbox 360, PS3, PSP and PC. But that's not all...

As keen scholars of Dark Ages epic poetry, SPOnG is keen to see how the team behind the first Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter will interpret the 3,183 line beast. Or, more accurately, the Robert Zemeckis' film.

So, let's see. Legendary Norse warrior with the strength of 30 men torn between nobility and brutality? Check.

Journey to Denmark to destroy the bloodthirsty beast Grendel, which is wreaking havoc on the land? Check.

Succumbing to fame and glory to claim the Danish throne? That's in there, too.

Violence descending on the land, prompting Beowulf to rise up and lead the Thanes to war? Oh yes.

Carnal power upgrades? Um... check?

Players will command up to 12 thanes in battle, with upgradable weapons so they can get down and dirty on the killing ground.

Gilles Matouba, creative director at Ubisoft tells us:

“From the very beginning, we have had an unprecedented level of access to information and assets from the movie. This access, coupled with the creative and technological abilities of our team, has allowed us to capture aspects of the film and translate them perfectly into compelling gameplay elements such as the visceral hand-to-hand combat, dynamic swordplay and amazing visuals, while giving us the creative liberty to go even further by creating exclusive content for the game that is unexplored by the film and even the classic tale.”

That's right. Exclusive, never-before-seen content from a millennium-old poem!

“The talented creators at Ubisoft are transforming our vision of the film into an interactive experience that extends the epic adventure far beyond its classic storyline” said Robert Zemeckis. “We’ve been thoroughly impressed with what we’ve seen from the game makers and are confident that gamers will find it to be an immersive and entertaining experience that goes far beyond the traditional movie-licensed game.”.
