LucasArts's New SIXAXIS Controller??

Image crops up showing 'new' controller.

The new SIXAXIS on top?
The new SIXAXIS on top?
There is either a new SIXAXIS controller for the PlayStation 3 available, or there is a very bored designer trying to find ways to illustrate an online story about Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

The picture to the right shows the 'new' SIXAXIS on top of the old. As you can see, the 'newer' controller sees the left-hand analog' stick moved up and into the middle of where the d-pad currently sits; in fact the positions of both are transposed.

Now, does this suggest some kind of Rumble (TouchSense) kind of action? Is this a brand new controller ready to be unleashed next August when Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is, erm, unleashed? We've asked the good people at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe to shed some actual, factual light on what, right now, can only be stamped "Speculation".

We'll report back as soon as we get the heads-up.

If you think about it... The Nintendo GameCube had that arrangement first as Microsoft released the XBox after the Cube was out.

I think in the US the xbox actually came out 2 days earlier but I imagine the cube was out in Japan first... off to wiki.

At any rate I'm sure if anything MS stole its controller design form the dreamcast. It's almost identical in size and shape and just has the extra stick inserted where it made the most sense. It's just a logical arrangement by priority. On the left side the Analog is more important than the d-pad and on the right the buttons are more important.

According to wiki, the Cube was shown off in 2000... So I would still assume the controller was shown before the XBox one.

Either way, it looks stupid. Anyway, I doubt Nintendo care whether it's like the GC one or not anymore... they have a better one.

It's about time! 3rd gen PS controller was STILL placing the analogue stick secondary to the the D-pad. It never made since.

Personally ithink its about time the whole controller was redesigned, it was great for the ps1 and the ps2 to any extent but with the the 360 pad showing how comfortable then can be (which is funny because i remember the dreamcast used to give me cramps) the surly sony could create a nice new hand freindly design???

hahaha

you think this is a controller redesign? why would anyone mess with brilliant dualshock design - esp. such a pointless "redesign" as swapping the analogue and d-pad?

and why are you all getting so worked up about Sony copying anyone elses design? this picture is a fake!

Somebody, somewhere relatively recently named the 360 controller the best console controller of all time...and it deserves the honor as the latest trunk on the console controller evolutionary tree...I say trunk, not branch, because its the most likely, IMNSHO, to represent this generation into posterity, and pass on its traits to the next. What makes the 360 controller what it is? What is wrong with the SIXAXIS?

First question.
Well, first take a SNES controller.
Inflate it to the shape of a 360 controller.
Induce the shoulder buttons to undergo mitosis, mutate the bottom pair to analog triggers.
Relocate D-pad and graft on asymetrical analog joysticks.
Implant rumble units, glowy bits, and big X button in middle.
Cut umbilical and craft belly button (Plug n' Play jack), receptacle for battery pack, and aural/vocal orifice.

Next Question. Well, whats different? Obviously no rumble. Instead you get motion, which is but, but not-fun. Fun becasue its new and different and interesting. Not-fun becasue theres a fairly steep learning curve at the moment, I think the future of motion sensing is in the future, not tommorrow, but perhaps the day after, at least for the hypercompetitive types like me. As a consequence of no rumble, it can forgo a battery pack in favor of much lighter regchageable integral unit (what do you do if the internal battery dies?). IMNSHO, the whole unit is too light (and small), but thats just my personal preference. Symetrical analog sticks...I don't know if theres a logical justification for my personal preference of asymetrical, but this may be of less importance. The final and most important difference, once again IMNSHO...aside from cordless and motion sensing the other significant difference the between the SIXAXIS and its predecessors was the further evolution of the 2nd shoulder buttons into something more triggery. However it was a tragically incomplete evolution. The level of convexity of the 2nd shoulder buttons on the SIXAXIS makes me want to cringe every time I pick one up. My fingers feel like they want to slip off all the damn time. If I owned one I would be doing some serious modifications on mine in the concave direction.

So yeah, Sony's controller needs a rework, reintroduce rumble, asym the sticks (optional), and concave lower shoulder buttons...of course this will make it a little bigger and heavier, but I see that as a good thing as well, handled correctly.

centsless - yes the original DualShock was brilliant (if as unoriginal as anything else in the market), but its old and the art has progressed. Clinging to it is no more valid than clinging to the d-pad was when analog was introduced.
