In a confidential leaked letter, Nintendo’s executive vice president for sales and marketing in the US, Peter Main, has lashed out at games stores running promotions for the Xbox.
“The curious question is, why retailers would join with a potential future industry participant eight or ten months, or perhaps longer before his unspecified product arrives,” said Main. “To essentially sell against these current and continuing impulse sales by installing an array of point of sales merchandising in the face of what is currently available. Is the message these retailers are wanting to send out for the customer to wait? And if so how long and for what?”
Main’s comments are understandable, if a bit naive. It has always been the tradition in games stores across the globe that retailers hype up the customer with visuals for what is due next.
