Tetsu Kayama seems to have a strategy to lift Sega from the nosedive the company is currently battling with.
“Sega has never won with any console hardware,” said Kayama. “Some people might say that Sega has succeeded with the console wars in US, but, even then, it's just been for a brief moment. Since Sega has been the underdog for 20 years, I think everybody related to Sega, internally and on the outside, didn't truly believe "Sega can win" deep down inside. It's only because of the loyal, hardcore Sega fans that we've been able to hang in there and last up until now. If we didn't make the decision to discontinue Dreamcast's production, the Sega brand might have disappeared.”
Speaking of how Sega intends to use its colossal support base, both within the industry and from the gaming community, Kayama said. “Even with Sega's current situation, many of our brilliant creators haven't abandoned us. Their decision to stay was a huge shot in the arm for us as a company, as far as encouragement goes. Sega will change. From now, as we start to change and become a winner in the software world, we'll take all of that encouragement and faith, internally and from our fans, with us. Then, when we are the top software maker in the world, we can share that joy with everyone.” These are confident words from Sega’s new boss. “I'm sure that we will be able to do this in the near future. I think that we have to achieve this, for the many people related to Sega and, of course, the fans that have always supported us. Otherwise, there is no meaning in my life.”
It seems that Sega has been blessed with another super-dedicated chairman.
