Nintendo has never been shy about blowing its own horn, and today with its latest stats for the DS's Wi-Fi service, it's blowing like an ageing jazz trumpeter after a night on the Mexican refried beans. The service now has an impressive five million unique users, and between them they've racked up 200 million gameplay sessions since November 2005 in the USA.
Tendy's European marketing director, Laurent Fisher, seems pretty chuffed, explaining:
“With Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo DS and Wii owners can connect to play a game with a friend, or against another player around the world and experience many hours of fun without needing to worry about complicated procedures or paying anything extra for the service.”
Nintendo tells us that the five most popular games on its Wi-Fi service are
Animal Crossing: Wild World,
Mario Kart DS,
Metroid Prime Hunters,
Pokémon Diamond and
Pokémon Pearl, even though the latter two won't see release in Europe until July 27th. If that list seems eerily familiar, it should. Last week SPOnG brought you the
Top 10 Nintendo platform games in terms of Wi-Fi usage and, if you omit
Mario Strikers for the Wii, these unsurprisingly made up the Top 5 there, too.
Nintendo also took the opportunity to throw another tidbit of information into the world: according to its own studies, “the share of females in the last five months has grown by 226 percent compared to the first six months of launch.”
SPOnG's
Girl Gamer will be thrilled, we're sure.
SPOnG took a moment to put its maths head on. Nintendo now says it's sold 11 million units of the DS worldwide, so around 45% of those buying the handheld have used it online.
In March Microsoft revealed that it had
six million users registered with Xbox Live - which has been in operation since November 2002.
