First Location-based DS Game Unveiled at 'Where 2.0'

“The future of geospace,” apparently

The first ever location-based DS game – a pirate-themed adventure called Plundr - has been unveiled at the recent Where 2.0 conference in San Jose, California, where more then 800 'geo' enthusiasts gathered to discuss the next wave of location- and mapping-enabled technology.

'Where 2.0' enabled attendees to find out more about “the people, projects, and issues building the new technological foundations and creating value in the location industry… the folks looking ahead to the future of geospace…”

Which all sounds very grand indeed!

Plundr’s developer, called 'area/code', (yes, lower case, see what they did) has ported the location-based game from PC over to Nintendo DS – making use of a Wi-Fi positioning system so players get different islands based on their actual physical location.

The game allows players to buy, sell or fight for goods and, "depending on where you are in the physical world, you'll find different islands, different market prices and different ships to fight."

Laptop gamers can download a trial version of the game from area/code’s website right here.

SPOnG looks forward to trialling the DS version (pictured) as soon as we manage to get hold of it.

This sounds like potentially an amazing game.

The lower screen does look basically just like a map, though; they could make it look more interesting.

I don't know how it downloads maps - i presume you have to connect to the internet and do it yourself, so that you can get the right map.

It would be good if you were going on a journey somewhere anyway, except it could be distracting. It would be funny if in the game it told you to steal some treasure, when in reality you were going down to the supermarket and stealing a bar of chocolate!

I can't really imagine, actually, how you can integrate the real world with a game, whilst being immersed in playing the game, yet also having to navigate reality at the same time.
