A document leaked by a developer in possession of one of Nintendo’s GameCube development kits has disclosed that the console can be upgraded, a fact that Nintendo omitted to tell the general public.
The machine will come equipped with 16MB of internal onboard RAM but will be upgradeable by a further 48MB. The additional RAM, which Nintendo will most likely sell as an add-on, like the Expansion Pak for the N64, and will probably use on of the GameCube’s underside ports.
This additional RAM will do exactly what you would expect. Extra graphics and sound storage, enhanced animation and decreased load times would all become possible.
Nintendo’s propensity and ability to unnecessarily split products in order to make a healthy profit (read Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Green and Pokemon Gold and Silver,) is demonstrated once again.
