Nintendo Uses the Tradesmens’ Entrance at Tokyo Game Show
Nintendo of Japan has announced that it will be attending the Tokyo Games show on the sly, in another twist in this strange tale.

Allow us to fill you in on the handbag swinging antics of Japan’s handheld console manufacturers.

Initially Nintendo said that it wouldn’t be attending the event, stating that it would not have enough new game material to make it worthwhile. This was the company’s stance on the matter for months, but all the time, the Game Boy Advance’s list of new games was swelling.

Bandai, makers of the SquareSoft backed WonderSwan Color were quite pleased about this. As things stood in January, Bandai could enjoy a few days in the limelight as the only handheld present at TGS, Japan’s most important event.

Then the Tokyo Game Show organisers announced they would be including a Portable Gaming Zone at the event, which would be occupied by handheld consoles and mobile phone based gaming for WAP and I-mode phones and PDAs.

Bandai were understandably pleased about this. For about five minutes. That’s how long it took for Nintendo to announce it would, after all, be showing at the event, in the Portable Gaming Zone. It then transpired that the TGS organisers had included the new zone for the sole purpose of attracting Nintendo.

Bandai was not at all pleased and immediately withdrew from the show. One day later it said it would be showing its new WonderSwan Color products, but not inside the Portable Gaming Zone.

By this time, it was mid-February and widely expected that the Portable Gaming Zone would be dominated by one of Nintendo’s trademark big flashy stands.

This is not the case. Nintendo has announced that it will be showing its first party GBA titles on CESA’s stand. This means that the Tokyo Game Show will see a major Bandai stand dedicated to portable gaming, outside the Portable Gaming Zone because Nintendo was going to have a stand in there, which it isn’t anymore.

Behave children! The Tokyo Game Show kicks off on March 30th and runs until April 1st. How apt.

We’ll bring you a full rundown on the games on show and full commentary on any hair-pulling or eye-scratching we see.
