Dig out your bling, folks, 'cos THQ's announced that a new
Saints Row title is coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3 next year.
THQ's executive vice president of worldwide publishing, Kelly Flock, said “The original
Saints Row earned critical acclaim for its stunning graphics, unparalleled customization options and the genre’s first-ever online multi-player. The game’s worldwide success shows the growing fanaticism for open-world gaming and our talented team at Volition is now using their proprietary technology to revolutionize the genre yet again.”
What Flock didn't mention in her corporo-speak was that the PS3 port of the original
Saints Row has been dropped, paving the way for this sequel. Speaking to analysts, THQ CEO Brian Farrell explained, “We think the most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous ship into a larger installed base next year. We think the bigger opportunity is a multi-platform launch.”
The growing lack of third-party console exclusives,
a la GTA IV, is well documented. Not finishing a port of an existing game because a non-multi-platform launch isn't worth the effort, however, just seems lazy to SPOnG.
