The latest issue of Japanese games mag (and 'bible') Famitsu reveals that over 10-million DS Lites have already been sold in Japan, making the total amount of DS’s sold in the country to date over 16-million.

This basically means that over one in ten people in Japan own a DS. Impressive.

To other statistics-loving videogame companies out there, Nintendo stressed to us today that these figures represent consoles SOLD. Not consoles left languishing in warehouses somewhere.

It’s taken the DS Lite 61 weeks to top the 10-million sales mark. To give this a little context it took the PS2 took 131 weeks to achieve the same feat, our mates over at MCV have kindly reminded us today.

Total worldwide DS sales to date are now in excess of 40-million.
