But is it just a party console?

The Charts: God of War II Proves PS2 Still Alive
Who needs next-gen gaming? Not Sony, looking at its chart performance with the PS2 this week. God of War II has, predictably, stormed into the charts at Number 1. If, for some reason, you find that baffling, you can read SPOnG's review here. GoW2's joined by fellow Sony first-party PS2 titles SingStar: Pop Hits and Buzz! The Mega Quiz, which also have strong debut weeks.

It's another fantasy-based title at Number 2, with Codemasters' Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar missing out to Kratos. Despite missing the top spot, LOTR Online does earn itself the honourable title of second-fastest selling online-only PC game ever. 'What could possibly have beaten Tolkein's epic?!' we hear you cry. Heh. World of Warcraft, silly...

LOTR Online is followed up by yet another fantasy game. Ubisoft's RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is propelled back into the Top 10 at Number 3, courtesy of its release on the PS3 last week. Would it have fared so well had it not slipped from the PS3 launch line-up? We'll never know.

Last week's Number 1, Pokemon Ranger on the DS from Nintendo, slips down to Number 5. It falls behind Nintendo's Wii Play which continues to do well thanks to renewed supply, despite slipping from Number 3.

Number 6 is where Sony's SingStar: Pop Hits lands for the PS2, giving Sony a rare double helping of Top 10 games. Buzz! The Mega Quiz doesn't fare quite so well, hitting the charts at Number 16. It's a very respectable showing for Sony, however. The performance of SingStar and Buzz! demonstrates, if nothing else, that the PS2 is still a favourite for party games.

Meanwhile, surprisingly to many doom-sayers, the only PS3 Sony exclusives, MotorStorm and Resistance: Fall of Man remain inside the Top 40 at Numbers 28 and 32 respectively.

We shouldn't forget the DS, however. As well as Pokemon Ranger, Harvest Moon DS (at Number 8) and Brain Training (still hanging in the Top 10 at Number 9), Nintendo sees success with Hotel Dusk: Room 215 jumping from Number 22 to Number 11 and Diddy Kong Racing entering the chart at Number 13 in its second week of release.

Next week expect to see Spidey swinging his way into the charts courtesy of Spider-Man 3 on every platform you can shoot a web at.

OK, how about "Who's dependant on next-gen gaming?" That's a bit more like it.
