Ubisoft's Birds On Surfboards

Not a bikini in sight

Ubisoft has announced that it's delivering a dose of summer fun with a new surf game on every platform you can shake a stick at. The imaginatively named Surf's Up is based on the upcoming animated movie of the same name. SPOnG's got the first screens of summer shenanigans here.

So, what can you expect from this surf game? Penguins - of course. And other assorted birds on boards. While SPOnG feels that surfing birds might be anatomically misguided, they look like they know how to have fun.

Ubisoft's promising “innovative arcade and surf feeling” (whatever that means) as you enter the Big Z Memorial Surf Off on Pen Gu Island. The main protagonist is one Cody Maverick, a plucky young Rockhopper penguin out to make a name for himself and enter the annals of surfing legend.

SPOnG can only really think of one good surfing game: Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer. Imagine Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4 with the sole difference of having catch a wave. And beachwear. Unfortunately, unless your sexual preferences are of the avian variety, there won't be much enjoyment to be had from beachwear. Since, however, Ubisoft's promising obstacles such as underwater volcanoes (and from the screens grinding's apparently part of surfing now) this could be promising.

For those of you who could never quite master catching a wave on your summer hols in Cornwall, don't worry. Apparently Cody's going to learn, “a true winner isn’t always the one who comes in first”.

Surf's Up will be available to grace your screen from May 22nd.
