Electronics giant IBM has announced that the GameCube CPU has gone into mass production. This follows reports from earlier this week that both the motherboard and the graphics chipset are ready to go.
The news from IBM has lent weight to the speculation that Nintendo is planning on making available 800,000 units for Japanese launch.
This will come as worrying news to Sony. Having seen off the Dreamcast, it would be fair to say the company has not taken full advantage of having the market almost to itself. When the GameCube hits Japanese shelves in July, the only Blockbuster game available for the PlayStation 2 will be Gran Turismo 3 A Spec. It looks as though GT3 will have to take on Nintendo single-handed until the arrival of Metal Gear Solid 2 next February.
Even with the recent spell of good news, Nintendo has failed to confirm a European release date for the console. We will bring you an update as soon as we get one.
