Wii On Porn: Christian Right Foams At Mouth

Think about the children

Wii On Porn: Christian Right Foams At Mouth
When it comes to online pornography, SPOnG likes to take a cautious yet libertarian approach. Many of us like it (though some will not admit to their habit!) yet, of course, we wouldn’t want our children exposed to it. This is basic common sense.

It’s a massive issue and one which every concerned adult should have an informed opinion on. However, to knock Nintendo’s Wii, as one well-funded Californian Christian group has been doing lately - because the console has an in-built internet browser (Opera) which (by its logic) therefore means that under-age users will be able to access pornography - is slightly disingenuous.

You can see the full 'shock-horror' press release below advertising an upcoming 'Porn Talk' media event.
Porn Talk is a website/initiative claiming to help concerned parents talk to their children about pornography, claiming to give parents the resources they need to have ‘productive conversations’ with their offspring about porn.

The site is backed by a strange faith-based Ministry in California called Ethur which, according to its website ‘exist to create spiritually focused projects that change culture….’ Their focus is ‘always on people, they are our target market’ and their maxim is ‘Do Good’.

SPOnG will add no further comment – other than to say that SPOnG's maxim, following our heroes Bill and Ted is simply 'Be excellent to each other'.

Here is the press release demonising the Wii as a porn machine:

The Wii's Dirty Little Secret
The Wiittle Porn Problem For Nintendo's Best Selling Game Console
CORONA, CA - The Nintendo Wii gaming console has a wiittle porn problem. That's right; this seemingly innocent family game console has a dirty little secret. It has the dubious ability to access pornography via the internet and most parents are not aware of this fact according to www.ThePornTalk.com
Like many new gaming technologies, the Wii's wireless internet capabilities make it a portal to porno. "Parents think the computer is the only way for their kids to get porn on the internet. Unfortunately, they are dead wrong," says Mike Foster, founder of ThePornTalk.com. "Gaming devices like the Wii and the PSP aren't just for fun games anymore. You're able to surf the net, chat with friends, email, and view porn because of its internet access. Kids know this but parents don't!"

Wireless internet (Wi-Fi) technology allows electronic devices like Nintendo's Wii to wirelessly connect to the internet. Airports, Starbucks, schools, and even entire cities give people the opportunity to log on the internet with a Wi-Fi device like the Wii or even Sony's PSP. "This makes it very difficult to monitor as a parent. You can easily put safeguards in your house but it's impossible to monitor in a Wi-Fi world," says Foster. "Even though the Nintendo Wii has parental controls, parents don't see a need for them because they are unaware of the porn capabilities."
The Nintendo Wii has become the best-selling video game console in the United States, outselling Microsoft and Sony competitors in the month of January, 2007. Because of its success many websites have taken advantage of its online capability. Several companies have changed the look and functionality of their web sites to accommodate the Wii. The porn industry is also implementing these changes to their sites. Porn websites are taking the look of the Wii's home page and menus and modeling their own sites after them. Porn sites are even converting their video clips so that they can run on the Wii.

So the solution lies in parents getting the facts and then talking to their children about expectations for online activity. Foster believes that, "Whether it is the home computer or these new gaming consoles, porn is easily accessible. The Wii is an amazing console and tons of fun but parents need good info on how to keep kids safe."

Hey, you guys are Bill and Ted fans too, excellent!

Lol, these religious crazies will stop at nothing to spoil our fun. While like some porn has its place in the world and indeed should be kept from minors until the are old enough to understand, and if they want to, digest and enjoy accordingly.

Sure Wii has a browser but I'm quite sure it (or Opera) also has parental control options too. Adjust them accordingly and there is no porn problem.

''But mommy, you lied to me, you said those were for making babies, then why's that lady eating one?'' Que puzzled look by parents.

Might be an idea for parents to not feed their kids tripe lies/half truths in their youth, tell them the truth.
I thought truth was the churches really maxim?. (They are probably the biggest liars around concerning Jesus, so perhaps not)

''Birds and bees don't only make honey, honey''. Lol.

i have been known to dabble in a few videos and the wii has F.A support for anything.
however it does not store history which is a bit dodgy, albeit to do with mem issue.

online pr0n is a very intersting thing.i dont think as a child we should be told the truth straigh off.every one needs to have sum childhood innocence(ignorance?).

would there be more rape cases if pr0n did not exist?

I notice that no-one's commenting that this group are advocating that parents take responsibility? Admittedly, they're being rather sensationalist in their actions, but they do state it is their intention to make sure parents are aware of the possible situation that could arise.

Why does that fact warrant an "of course"? What's so bad and wrong with sex that we should protect our chidren from it?
It's just f**king hiphoprisy!

Next you'll be saying that children shouldn't drink or take drugs.

Libertarian. Librarian more like!

I am a Christian, and I believe Porn is a terrible thing, but how can you blame Nintendo for on-line Porn? I have a Wii, and it rocks! I do not believe that this is a problem since you have to Download the Web Browser on the Wii for it to work. Plus, there are Parental Controls, use them! I am sick of most Christians believing that the Average Person is Stupid, everybody knows what is on the Internet! Its a risk you take! I downloaded the Web Browser, and I have no intention of looking at Porn! Dammit Man, we are not Stupid!!

Porn is not terrible - it's not a proper noun either. It's a perfectly natural and healthy thing.

but how can you blame Nintendo for on-line Porn?

I don't think the "you" you are referring to (Spong) WAS blaming Nintendo for on-line porn. I think that was you lot.

I am sick of most Christians believing that the Average Person is Stupid

I know, no-one likes to think that an activity that had previously been their preserve is going mainstream. But while it cannot be denied that all Christians are stupid (all superstitious people are), you'll have to learnt to accept that not all stupid people are Christians.

I have no intention of looking at Porn! Dammit Man, we are not Stupid!!

Why not? Because a book compiled to control adn subjugate people tells you it's wrong?

The only dream I have is that if Christians hate porn and sex so much, they'll stop breeding.

Oh please, do continue people.

Sure I believe porn is a good and healthy, and just talking about it here is a good thing in itself. The bad part comes from what type of porn is available and to what ends it will serve. Then comes the grey area that any law can only serve and protect us from so much. Example (bestiality, dark kiddy stuff etc. Don't agree with any of that stuff, but the reality is they to have always existed, just never talked or shouted about. Scaremongers will use these to scare everyone, that all porn is evil. Like everything in life, it has its good and bad side.

Funny thing here is that porn has been around as long as religion has. Strange that porn offers a pleasurable escape in small doses to natural urges, but religion offers to take your mind, body, money, soul and will to live and think freely (well that's how I see it anyways. On top of that causes so much conflict and death that its kinda not funny any more.

So I ask you what's worse? Brainwashing, death and war in the name of any ideaology or appreciation of the human intimacy to a degree, outside of societies marital ties, so long as no on is being hurt and its all consenting etc?

Like a tv has an on/off switch exact your own type of censorship. Wii lets you do it, so bleedin well use its options it has and leave it alone.

To be accurate, wile pornographic materials have been around since the dawn if civilisation, the idea of pornography as shameful or degrading has only been around since the Victorian era.

Before that, pornography was just erotic art that was intended to arouse the viewer and contained little or no artistic merit. Erotica, as we all know, is the artistic side of erotic art.

It was the Victorians that put in place the legal framework to ban or limit access to pornographic materials - the world's first law criminalizing pornography was enacted in the Obscene Publications Act of 1857 in the UK.
