Rumour Mill: Interest Free Credit On The PS3?
Rumours are circulating that Sony and European retailer Game are in talks to offer interest free credit on the PS3.

The news apparently came from an unnamed Sony rep as they were visiting retailers today to hype the upcoming PS3 launch.

This would not be unusual in terms of the PS3 being an electrical item topping the £400 mark. It would, however, be the first time (as far as SPOnG's aware) a manufacturer has been involved in such a scheme for a gaming platform.

SPOnG contacted Sony and was advised "We don't have an official line on this - we're sure retail will be exploring all options open to them." Game was unable to comment.

If true, the rumour serves to underscore just how far outside the existing parameters of console pricing the PS3 is. It would also further demonstrate the perception at Sony that the PS3 is more an entertainment hub than a straight-forward console.

Would interest-free credit make buying a PS3 more viable for you? Let us know in the Forum.

I think historically in the UK, no games system that cost £400 has ever been a success.
I'm pretty sure the Sega Saturn cost something like that amount and then also there was the all singing and dancing, 700 quid 3DO that was going to be an entertainment centre as well as a console.
Sounds familiar doesn't it.

But the 3DO only had 2 decent games.

Interest free purchases have been extremely popular here in Australia, where people are willing to pay smaller amounts over time for the whizz bang material possession now.

In the past, there were deals to get a 24 month mobile phone contract with some providers and have a "free xbox thrown in"

A PS3 is a major purchase here (AU$1,000), so i wouldn't be surprised if people utilise such a facility for their PS3 purchase.
