March 22nd is a date Capcom can look forward to this year, as it marks the fifth anniversary of the Resident Evil (Biohazard) franchise in Japan. Capcom is likely to celebrate the occasion with some kind of event for supportive industry players.
Capcom unveiled the first in the Resident Evil series back in 1996; a much needed spurt of innovation after an excess of Street Fighter releases. The first in the series made a great impact and Capcom’s profits soared. The company saw the potential of the product and went on to release several further games across multiple platforms. Capcom are currently producing a complete version of the former Dreamcast exclusive Code Veronica on PlayStation 2.
In celebration of the anniversary, the Japan-based giant is set to release a limited edition collector’s pack with software and merchandise from the franchise. The package, showcased in a metallic briefcase, will include all four PlayStation releases (1, 2, 3 and Gun Survivor), as well as a CD holder, silver ring and a key chain. Capcom currently plans to release just ten thousand units, and a European release has not yet been confirmed, nor has a price point been set.
The games mark one of the greatest developments of the 32-bit generation, and further releases are almost certain, setting Capcom’s reputation in stone.
