News from the Midway event in Las Vegas today on a bunch of planned new releases, including
BlackSite: Area 51 for PC/PS3/360,
Hour of Victory for 360 and some handheld mini-games and brainteasers in the shape of
Touchmaster DS for – yep, you guessed it - Nintendo DS and
Hot Brain for PSP.
BlackSite: Area 51 is the sequel to Midway’s current-gen shooter
Area 51 (pictured) and is set for a summer release. The game’s storyline is set in the desert and small towns surrounding Area 51 and the publisher describes the gameplay as:
“An action packed, first person shooter experience which pits gamers against alien enemy forces using the infamous U.S. government landmark, Area 51®, and the surrounding areas as the battlefield backdrop… a next-generation game that will redefine the first person shooter (FPS) genre… integrating cutting edge technology, game design and story writing to create the ultimate entertainment experience. The player’s modern-day emotions and fears are driven into a world charged with grave responsibility affecting lives hanging in the balance and eventually finding himself torn between his professional orders and his own ethical standards…”
God knows how many FPSs to date have ‘redefined the genre’. It seems the genre has been redefined so many times, it must be time for publishers to find some other way of hyping their latest first person shooters. However,
Area 51 was a decent enough title, so SPOnG will be keeping a close eye on this sequel.
Unreal Engine 3.0 powered
Hour of Victory jumps unashamedly amidst the hugely popular World War II game genre, and is to be made available exclusively for Xbox 360 this Summer and is described as follows:
“…play a key role in the pivotal and cinematic battles from the European and North African theaters of World War II, using the skills and gameplay style you choose. Built with, Hour of Victory allows you to sneak into enemy territory as a covert operative, storm the gates as a British commando, or snipe from afar as an Army ranger – each character’s unique attributes will be needed for the fulfillment of the overall objective. Only with all these skill working closely together will you be able to say that you helped define the Hour of Victory.”
Finally,
Touchmaster DS and
Hot Brain on PSP. The first title is a collection of classic touchscreen controlled mini-games including Trivia, Solitaire, Gem Slide and Mah Jongg with WiFi play so you can connect to the Midway Tournament Network for high scores, tournaments and daily rankings.
In some more unashamed popular-genre bandwagon jumping,
Hot Brain on PSP is a brain-training title to keep your mind alert in areas like logic, memory, math, language and concentration. It’s good to be alert. Our country needs lerts.
