Nintendo has announced that its DS handheld console has sold over 10 million units in Europe. This makes it the fastest games machine to hit that mark in European history, managing it just 22 months. An impressive 1.7 million units were sold in December of last year alone.
Laurent Fischer, European Marketing Director said:
"Nintendo DS
topped the six million mark in September and has continued to go from strength to strength with thousands of new people being introduced to gaming through the Nintendo DS. Its appeal to both gamers and non-gamers means it has expanded the gaming population significantly. This landmark figure of 10 million Nintendo DS gamers cements the console's position as undisputed leader of the handheld market, bringing gaming to a whole new audience - something that was unimaginable a few years ago!
Well, he would say something like that, wouldn't he? But the success of the DS is certainly nothing to sniff at, as it occupies the
number two spot for software sales and dumps the PSP into third place. A significant portion of software sales can be attributed to non-traditional games. Over half of all European DS owners now have a copy of
Nintendogs whilst
Dr Kawashima's Brain Training has sold two million copies and managed to stay in the charts for six months.
Well done 'Tendy. SPOnG's proud of you.
