Dr Chris Doran, co-founder of, Geomerics – a company specialising in simulation software for physics and lighting is giving a lecture/sales pitch at the Science Museum’s Game On exhibition in London. Called "Video Games: Look of the future" it will outline the development of reflection and radiosity effects for game environments.

Dr Doran commented:

"Lighting is one of the biggest challenges for the next generation of video games, but real-time reflection and radiosity effects are seen by many as an unattainable goal, even on the newest consoles. I'm here to prove that…realistic lighting is now within reach for games developers worldwide."

Still not sure why you should care about the nitty-gritty of lighting? Have a look at a demo video here.

The technology takes the form of two algorithms: 'Real-Time Radiosity' and 'Wavelet PRT'. The technical stuff, according to information SPOnG's received, goes like this:

The solution achieves frame rates of up to 100Hz on common graphics hardware, and allows for fully dynamic lighting including point spot-lights, area lights, texture-based lighting, glowing objects and the projection of video onto geometry. The full indirect lighting calculation includes the soft-shadows that characterize real-world scenes. Geomerics' technology also integrates smoothly with classic techniques such as normal and gloss mapping, and fully supports HDR (high dynamic range) lighting effects.

Doran is part of the second wave of industry insiders to speak at the Game On exhibition. It's already offered rare insight into the industry from the likes of Eidos's Ian Livingstone and legendary programmer David Braben.

The talk takes place on January 22nd.

(Radiosity, if you were wondering, is "A method for rendering a view of a three-dimensional scene that provides realistic lighting effects, such as interobject reflections and colour bleeding.")
