Games sales continue their post-greedmas slump moving into the second week of January. Nintendo, however, manages to laugh it off, as its sales surge.
Thanks to the release of
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, as well as renewed availability of the console itself and
Zelda, Wii software sees an 86% increase in units sold.
The other strong performer is the 360, which claims its largest market share since the release of
Gears of War and creeps past the PS2 in terms of value with a 4% increase. The market as a whole, however, sees a predictable decrease of 29% in units and 24% in value.
One area that may well see a turn-around this week is PC gaming. The PC market reflects Week 2's trend with a 25% drop-off. The PC's stupidly bright glimmer of hope comes in the form of
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. Its
midnight launch attracted what looked to SPOnG like substantially more people than the Wii launch. Couple this with
World of Warcraft crashing into the budget All-Formats chart as rendered by ChartTrack, and it looks like this might be a good week for PC gaming.
Capcom turns things frosty this week for EA, grabbing the Number one slot with
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition in its debut week. This is Capcom's first all-formats chart-topper since
Dead Rising 19 weeks ago.
The spiffing
WarioWare: Smooth Moves from Nintendo also sees a strong debut week, sliding in at number two.
EA's FIFA 07 drops down the tables to number three. It experiences a 59% drop-off, the largest this week. Still, any title that can suffer a sales drop off that large and still stay in the top three looks like it's doing alright to SPOnG.
Nintendo's
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess battles its way back into the top 10 this week. After suffering from weeks of low stocks, renewed supplies (along with an 85% increase in Wii hardware sales) give it a sales kick. It's up from number 36 to eight. There are now 17 platform-exclusive titles in the Top 40.
The only other new title to join
Lost Planet and
WarioWare in the top 40 is Sega's
World Snooker Championship 2007 which comes in at number 17.
There were a couple of Wii re-entries with sales bolstered by the aforementioned renewed hardware stocks.
Wii Play skips merrily back in at 19, while
Red Steel slashes its way to number 34.
