According to Nintendo the “Wii and DS games consoles topped the must have gifts chart this Christmas" (in the UK). Apparently “Record-breaking numbers of Nintendo DS and Wii consoles sold out as quickly as they could be restocked.”
The fact that the consoles sold out as quickly has they could be restocked can be read in one of two ways, of course. Firstly, that they are indeed hugely successful. Secondly, that there weren’t enough on the shelves to start with.
To counter the latter, Nintendo is quoting independent research company, Chart Track, in order to confirm figures. Chart Track says that ‘almost 200,000 Wii consoles were sold in the UK over the Christmas period’… The total number of Nintendo DS units sold in the UK in December topped 500,000 making it not only the best selling console of any kind in the UK this Christmas - but the best selling console of any kind in 2006.”
The DS also did gangbusters in Europe as a whole where it, “…enjoyed a record breaking Christmas experiencing its highest ever monthly sales since its launch in March 2005, 1.7 million units were sold across Europe during December making it the best selling games console in Europe across all formats, both in December and 2006, by a substantial margin.”
Ok, so “highest ever” would normally mean, well, ‘ever’ – rather than since March 2005 – but you can’t argue with 1.7-million units.
Wii launched across Europe on December 8th 2006 and, “became the fastest selling games console in European history after its first weekend,” selling more than 700,000 units in Europe in December 2006.
On the software side, 500,000 copies of
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess were bought for Wii in December – meaning that 70% of Wii owners also made the link.
Only 45% of Wii owners in Europe attached themselves to the rather less wonderful,
Wii Play with 320,000 copies sold.
We are awaiting firm figures from both Sony and Microsoft.
