Kaz Hirai Says Worldwide Console Launch Never Been Done

Err, what about that Xbox 360?

Good old Kaz Hirai is at it again, shooting the breeze with trade rag 'Blu-ray Today' at CES this week and really setting his PR people up with some fun little ‘what Kaz actually meant by this was…’ tasks for the day.

This time, speaking about the PS3’s power, Blu-ray storage capacity and the issues surrounding simultaneous worldwide product launches, Kaz weighed in with the following:

"I have heard many people say our competitors' systems are just as powerful as the PS3. That simply is not true…No other next generation entertainment system pushes the envelope on advanced technology like PS3."

Kaz on Blu-ray, "I have heard people say that a high-capacity game delivery vehicle like Blu-ray isn't necessary in a next generation computer entertainment system. You just can't expect that 9GBs of storage capacity found on today's DVDs are going to have enough space to hold tomorrow's games."

On Resistance: Fall of Man (16GB game), "[it] simply wouldn't be possible on any other system without using multiple discs".

On worldwide launches, "A worldwide launch for any console is quite ambitious. In fact, it has never been done before…I suppose if we had simply done a mild upgrade to the PS2 and not pushed the envelope so hard, it would have been easier on ourselves. However, if we did that every time, we wouldn't be Sony."

Errr, Kaz? Remember that 360 launch?

That's 16 GB without any kind of compression. With today's compression techniques you can bet that generique sci-fi shooter game can fit a dual-layered dvd in a snap.

yeah, looking at 360 games and ps3 games i find it very hard to believe that resistance couldnt be ported to the 360 without losing any content or spreading onto two discs

Much as we would all like to believe it, three territories isn't the whole world. Fair play to Microsoft, they launched in three territories at once, but Australia got none, nor did South America, most of Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East or Africa.

Sony delayed launching in one territory of those three, and we hates them for it, but Microsoft didn't do Worldwide either.

Indeed. MS was silly and thought in order to qualify "world wide" they had to at least hit the three largest markets. Thankfully for sony someone over there was smart enough to realize that if they just get two teritories on oposite side of the world they would be covered.

He makes it sound like they attempted a worldwide launch but it didn't go so well. But the fact is they didn't even attempt it and even then they mucked it up.

Sony might say they planned to a year ago but Sony says a lot of things, it sounds like he wants us to feel sorry for him or something.

The most disturbing rumour I've heard about a european delay is that the PS3 doesn't meet the new EU power requirements (it consumes too much power in standby mode). No wonder Sony have just annouced a new smaller, less hungry chip. If the rumour is true we may be waiting a lot longer.

I swear I read somewhere that somebody dumped resistance to an image and found that it contained about 9GB of padding to fill the disc. Link anyone? I think it was on Joystiq...

Still loving that whole realistic giant crab-thing btw. Still makes me chuckle when I think about it. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiddgggggggggeeeeeeeeee Raaaaaaaaacccccceeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!! You remember? One track? £45 game? £300 games console with a demo disc and nothing else????
