The Charts: Canis Canem Edit Chuckles Defiantly

Controversial franchise ups its chances of getting a sequel

Yeah, that's right
Yeah, that's right
The first week of January sees the usual post-Greedmas sales drop-off. Week on week overall software sales figures are down a stonking 49% from the end of 2006. Rockstar, however, still has a schoolboy smirk on its face as Canis Canem Edit nabs its highest ever chart spot.

It's not all dabbing back tears with discarded wrapping paper for the industry at large, however. Overall software sales figures beat those of Week 1 of last year by a solid 25.3% in units shifted and 12.5% in value.

EA is easily the week's dominator, bagging the top 3 slots. FIFA '07 scores once again, retaining the Number 1 spot from last week (although it'll have to slip soon or SPOnG will run out of footy puns).

Need for Speed: Carbon crawls up from Number 3 to Number 2. The Sims 2: Pets follows suit, clambering from Number 4 to Number 3. EA are the only publisher to have more than one title in the top 10.

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 6 sees a slight dip in form as it slides two spots to Number four.

The happy news for Rockstar is that Canis Canem Edit muscles its way up three places to Number 5, its highest chart ranking ever! SPOnG's heart is suitably warmed to see this underdog battling its way to the top. All those naysayers who said the game would never get a sequel might just be proved wrong at this rate…

THQ's WWE Smackdown Vs Raw has been, well, smacked down five places from Number 6 to Number 11. Whilst their oiled-up wrestling license may have slipped from the Top 10, however, THQ fairs reasonably. Its cuter, family-oriented license Cars has cruised up from Number 10 to Number 7.

Happily, TT Games' LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy and Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. both bounce back into the Top 10 at Numbers 8 and 9 respectively.

Further down the chart things shuffle around slightly, but few surprises jump out. SCEE's Buzz! Junior: Jungle Party is the highest Top 40 climber, leaping like Tarzan on herbal steroids from Number 39 to Number 23.

Nintendo gets a Wii exclusive title back into the Top 40 this week, with Zelda: Twilight Princess pipping its way back in at Number 36.

And that's how things look for our pals over in retail.

Hmmm, could Canis Canem Edit's chart position maybe be because you can pick it up for less than 15 quid in most shops about now?

Weird how Buzz! Jungle Party's picking up: if the store I work at is any indication, plenty of people are returning the Buzz controllers because the wires and cables appear to be fused together.

Probably a faulty batch.
