Nokia and Motorola, two of the biggest players in the mobile phone world, today announced their intentions to move forward with WAP gaming.

Motorola has teamed up with Creature Labs to develop a series of games for WAP and next-generation GPRS communicators. In a Tamagochi inspired decision, Creature will develop Sea Monkey digital animals for people to care for on their phones. The Sea Monkey lives in a little tank and must be fed and looked after by the user, with online bonuses such as new plants and tank equipment being made available to download.

Creature Labs chief executive, Chris Mckee said, "We're really pleased to have formed a partnership with Motorola to exploit the exciting games opportunities represented by next generation wireless devices."

In a similar move Nokia and Eidos have announced a deal that will see Eidos developing online games specifically for Nokia phones and online PDAs (personal digital organisers.)

"Nokia strongly believes that mobility will bring unprecedented value to on-line entertainment. This represents a huge business potential for game publishers, such as Eidos. For instance, Datamonitor recently estimated that four out of five mobile phone users will play mobile games by 2005. In revenue terms this will mean a multi-billion dollar business. WAP has rapidly become a widely adopted standard for mobile Internet services and phones, therefore it is the ideal vehicle with which to boost a wide selection of new mobile game services," said Graham Stafford, senior manager for business development at Nokia.
