Nintendo has been strangely quiet to date about the ways in which the DS and the Wii will work together to bring new gameplay experiences for users. It’s clearly part of the long-term strategy and the UK’s DS Product Manager James Honeywell has gone on record this week to confirm, in a typically vague Nintendo way, that full Wii/DS interoperability should be with us sometime next year.
Speaking to august industry organ,
MCV earlier this week, Honeywell (pictured here at this year's
MCV awards with marketing director, Dawn Paine) said, “You will definitely see Wii and DS interoperability as soon as we have it finished…We haven’t made any announcements over specific software for connectivity, but there are definitely a number of exciting things in creation which we want to bring to market as soon as possible. We’re hopeful that will be next year.”
“Our competitors might offer connectivity between formats, but it concentrates on media capabilities, rather than the fun and interaction you’ll get when you bring our two consoles together…. For example, the connectivity between Xbox 360 and PC is very much based in streaming video and other media. The link-up between Wii and DS will be much more about offering new forms of gameplay, fun and interaction. It will offer yet another new set of experiences for the whole family.”
SPOnG has put a call in to James today to find out more about the specific features which will make up the Wii/DS interoperability and more about the specific ways in which our well-loved Nintendo franchises might make use of them.
