Sony’s Dave Karraker, senior director of corporate communications at Sony Computer Entertainment America, has gone on record telling
The Wall Street Journal that he feels Wii is a novelty. Yet he does admit that PS3 fans might pick one up.
Speaking to
TWSJ, Karraker said, "We feel very confident that the PlayStation fan is going to wait until they can get a PlayStation 3. If they do pick up a Wii, it's as more of a novelty."
To claim the Wii is a novelty is clearly a nonsense. This particular SPOnG writer sat up till daft’o’clock playing the sublime new
Zelda on Wii last night, which for me has immediately become one of the strongest contenders for game of the year 2006. It’s a game that Sony’s Dave Karraker might want to play before he comes out with further nonsensical comments regarding his competitor.
SPOnG is reminded of Phil Harrison’s comments on DS way back in the summer of 2005, when told esteemed industry organ,
MCV, “With the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen. But I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that.”
Alongside the Wii, Nintendo’s DS is Christmas 2006’s must have piece of gaming hardware, as
SPOnG reported yesterday. What do YOU think of the Wii? Have you played it yet? If not, are you planning on getting one? Let us know in the forum below.
