Rainbow Six Vegas Gets All Patched Up

Are publishers shipping more broken games?

Posted by Staff
SPOnG’s a big fan of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas. It’s a beautiful looking videogame, plus it is one of the first multiplayer titles on the 360 that makes full use of the Live Vision Camera, to enable you to map your face onto your in-game character (see Adam's ugly mug, pictured right here!).

However, we’re rather perturbed to see that a bug list as long as our arm has cropped up, with the development team having posted on the game’s official forum a list of items that they are ‘addressing’ in an upcoming patch (see below).

The patch covers a numbers of key fixes for 36 gameplay issues, including the voice chat bug (which seems to have been the most annoying for fans), plus a variety of crash bugs and a Live Vision Camera bug.

This all begs the question, should this game have been tested more rigorously? Is this a wider concern for gamers?

this is the dark side of the coin...I saw this coming with the advent of patches via LIVE. Its disgraceful. Beta testers shouldnt have to pay for the product they're testing.

yeah this is appalling. like roy said, its as if the customer is the beta tester. the product that they parted with their cash for was by no means finished it seems

I'd make some cheap comment here about Microsoft having done this for ages with Windows, but I can't see games on the PS3 being any better.

Console games used to be "print and be damned" type affairs that were cast in stone the second they left the cart manufacturers so they had to be as close to perfect as they could be. Then when we switched to CD, it was easier to do several pressings and have an updated version go out if there were game destroying bugs in the original version. Now with Internet connectivity and systems that allow patching via hard drive installed executables that load the audio/visual assets from the original discs, we have the ultimate in "fix it when the players find it" environments.

All of this, coupled with the rising complexity of game code, has led to a situation where even the most well-intentioned game developer must be sorely tempted to "fix it later" and to hang with the gamers.

Progress, eh?

Being a little harsh here guys. I with you that games sould be fully tested and most if not all bugs should be removed before launch.

This patch, from what I understand, is for the multiplayer game only? And with multiplayer games there is pretty much always going to be something to patch as people find ways to cheat and destroy the game experience for everyone else.

But this does seam pretty close to the actual relaese...

But Gears of War could do with a patch to give the Host the ability to change the games setting once the game has been setup... why they didn't think of this before the game got released...
