God Of War Creator David Jaffe - HighTimes at Playboy Mansion
“I just fucked up my game on the PSP, it wasn’t any good. It’s true… I’m just a B-Level developer, I know that.”
God of War creator, David Jaffe, despite the attentions of his Sony minder/cum commercial suitor, made the most of the refreshments on offer at the Playboy mansion – announced that he has started the process that will result in GOW III; that his fighting system is not as good as Devil May Cry; and that his PSP vresion was, basically, not good – all in one five-minute burst.
The minder, Jeff Reese of Sony Marketing (according to the footage which appears courtesy of GT TV, surprisingly does not freeze solid and then faint at Jaffe’s comment: “I just fucked up my game on the PSP, it wasn’t any good. That’s true, there wasn’t a bullshit rumour.” Instead he announces that GOW will, “move onto multiple platforms which will culminate this classic battle-rama on Playstation 3”.
Jaffe response is eye-opening and could well result in Mr Jaffe’s non-attendance at the next Playboy party, “Fuck you,” says Jaffe, “I don’t know what you just said”, he continues with more diplomacy than Reese, “We’re dying to make one (GOW III, we’re dying to make one on PS3, but no one has come down from kind of Sony exec level and said, ‘here’s your money, here’s your team, go make it.”
Mmmm… a tiny slice of politics right in front of your eyes. In fact Jaffe proceeds to make quite deliberate mention of the Wii – along with the PS3 when he goes on to speak (rather blandly) about controller interfaces for the potential GOW III.
And the diplomacy just gets better, with Jaffe revealing nothing in his comparison of the Xbox Live and Sony’s Playstation Network, “Do I think Sony’s service will be as strong a service (as XBL)? I hope so. I mean the stuff that I’ve seen behind the scenes… I like to think that Sony is going to surpass Xbox live on all that they are doing, but I think there’s room for all of us in that space…”
Much of the interview is, it has to be said, open and portrays Jaffe as a little, well, tipsy; honest, modest and incredibly diplomatic as the politics of Sony vs Microsoft vs Nintendo play out around him.
“I’m just doing the best I can. Thank you so much for playing our games… I’m drunk as shit right now…” is his honest pay off. Bless him.
