Nintendo’s just sent word on the plans for next week’s midnight Wii launch at HMV’s flagship Oxford Street store. Celebs in attendance include the ubiquitous Jodie Kidd and Ian Wright (‘due to the golf connection’ according to a Nintendo rep), plus hard-man boxer Ricky Hatton and ageing tennis pro, Pat Cash.
All will undoubtedly be playing Wii Sports and being photographed a lot by eager young gamers and random Japanese tourists.
No stars of the worlds of Baseball or Bowling (the other two games in the Wii Sports package) have so far been announced.
If you want to get your hands on a Wii then the store opens at 9am next Thursday so we would advise you to get down there as early as possible.
“We have 125 unreserved Wiis” HMV’s PR guy, Simon Winter, just told SPOnG-News, “so really it’s up to the individual when they want to turn up to get in the queue”, he added.
“We did have a Take That event last week where a number of fans were queuing up overnight in Adam and Eve Court, which is where the Wii queue will also be, so there is always a possibility that some customers might do that!” he said.
What about the unlucky punters who don’t make it into the top 125 in the queue?
“Well we also have 500 limited edition Zelda’s which come packaged in a very cool tin box on offer on the day”, the HMV man told us.
Although, if you succeed in scoring a copy of Zelda yet don’t manage to get your hands on a Wii, then that’s adding insult to injury in SPOnG’s eyes.
When asked about further stocks coming in before Christmas, Mr Winter was vague, telling us that, “We want to aim to avoid disappointment before Christmas… We’ve got to work with Nintendo and they’ve got to work with us to make sure we honour any promises to our customers.”
Demand for Wii is remarkably high. Amazon sold out within minutes when they were made available recently, making it the fastest-selling pre-order it has ever listed. Comet, Dixons and Game have already listed Wii as one of their top-selling items this Christmas.
So, the message is this. If you don’t have a Wii and want one this year, get yourself down to HMV as early as you possibly can next Thursday and wear some warm clothes!
The celeb-based shenanigans kick off at 11pm. SPOnG will be there to hobnob with the C-listers, give Ricky Hatton a good beating (at Wii Sports Boxing) and speak to the hardcore fraternity at the front of the queue as it grows throughout the day.
