It appears that despite neither machine officially being available in the UK, London’s Science Museum has been donated both a Wii (launch December 8th) and a Playstation 3 (launch, sometime in March).

"London? Bah!" We hear you say, well, we can also announce a PS3 spotting further north. SPOnG was wading through the mob-scene that is Leeds city centre on a Saturday afternoon when we happened upon the local branch of ComputerXchange (CeX) and a hastily printed sign stating “Play PS3 Today!”

Intrigued, we bludgeoned several pasty-looking Goth kids and struggled into the store. Lo and behold there was a PS3 in all its shiny goodness. We spoke to CeX who confirmed that all the stores were sent a console “from head office”, but would not confirm how they had come by the product. Massive eBay auction or great contacts?

Back on the Science Museum beat, SPOnG spoke with a very helpful spokesman for that august institution in London today. He explained to us that – as this story goes to press – he was unsure as to the format (e.g. PAL or otherwise) of either the Wii or PS3.

However, both consoles – plus a 360 and various other gaming delights dating back, according to that same spokesman, to Spacewar in 1962 – will be on public view from Wednesday November 29th at the Game On exhibition.

The details, from the Science Museum are:
From 11am on Wednesday 29 November the Science Museum's Game On exhibition will be the only place in the UK where you can play the consoles of the past and the future as the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 are installed well in advance of their UK public release.

Prices: £8.50 adult, £6.50 child/concession. Discounted family and group tickets available. Book online now or call 0870 906 3890 (booking fee applies).
