While specialist retailers have closed Wii pre-orders, with the U.K. Wii launch – Friday December 8th – rapidly approaching, local online retailer, Amazon.co.uk
is opening pre-orders tomorrow, November 21st.So, it appears that Amazon has bought into Nintendo’s much-vaunted (and equally maligned among ‘industry pundits’ at least) view that the Wii will attract lapsed and non-gamers – including, gasp, ladies!
The e-tailer says that, “We’re limiting orders to one per customer” – which seems fair enough. However, it contrasts with the experience of SPOnG’s New York reporter who - along with 9,000 other New Yorkers - was able to pickup not one, but
two Wiis in Time Square.
Read the full story here. It’s estimated that more than one million Wii consoles have already been sold over launch weekend - with plenty more Wiis on the way. This can be contrasted against best estimates for the total number of PS3s currently in the States, which sits at below 300,000. Bear in mind that at this early stage no sales figures for either console have been confirmed by audit – so we’re still marching in a fog of claim and counter claim.
SPOnG has contacted Nintendo in the U.K. to gauge reaction to the U.S. Wii launch. We also want to discover whether London will play the same role as New York (and to a lesser extent L.A.) with regional centres possibly suffering shortages as a result. As soon as Nintendo responds, you will be the first to know.
