Sega’s European CEO Miyake-San is in crisis talks at Sega of Japan today, in a bid to keep the European Dreamcast online. The cost of hosting the console’s online play in Europe has been deemed excessive by Sega’s Japanese board.

Miyake-San is also requesting that upcoming titles Daytona USA 2001 and Propeller Head are launched with online functions as standard.

“It has been decided at the very top level within the Japanese headquarters, that the cost of funding European online play for the Dreamcast cannot be maintained. It was worth continuing as a loss leader as an incentive to buy the hardware, but now it’s just a loss. We don’t want Sega’s hardcore fans to be left feeling betrayed by us and that is the message that Miyake-San will be delivering in his meeting with the Japanese board”, said a spokesman for Sega.
