Metroid for the GameCube will be a first-person shooter similar to Half-Life is the latest game news to come from troubled Retro Studios over the weekend. The news follows reports last week that the company was relocating staff away from its GameCube projects to games that would see a more immediate return. The company has also been forced to make several redundancies.
It is rumoured that Nintendo product evaluators were not overly impressed with the title running in its original third person view and ordered Retro to make the necessary changes. The news will be welcomed by some of Retro’s higher profile staff acquisitions, especially David Kirsch, formerly of id Software.
Nintendo holds a great deal of power over Retro Studios. Back in 1999, the Japanese giant released funds to allow Jeff Spangenberg to open Retro and took a majority share in the company. The deal included dedicated support for Nintendo’s home console projects moving forward. It is not known how Nintendo plans to address Retro’s problems.
